The District of Columbia requires that certain contractors furnish surety bonds to ensure compliance with laws and regulations in force in the District of Columbia. Contractors who offer Plumbing, Refrigeration, Gas Fitting and HVAC services are subject to the bond requirements. 

Home Improvement Contractors in the District of Columbia are also required to furnish surety bonds to the Department of Consumer and Regulatory Affairs. All applicants for a Basic Business License for the Home Improvement Contractor category must furnish a surety bond in the amount of twenty five thousand ($25,000). Anyone aggrieved by the violation of the laws or regulations in force in the District of Columbia may take action against the surety bond.
