Maryland Private Detective Agency or Security Guard Agency Bond

What is a Maryland Private Detective Agency or Security Guard Agency Bond?

Update: As of May, 2020, the Maryland State Police Department no longer requires a surety bond for licensure as a private detective or security guard agency.

The Maryland Private Detective Agency or Security Guard Agency Bond is required by the Maryland State Police to obtain a license for a private detective agency or for a security guard agency. The bond protects customers from fraudulent or illegal actions by the agency. Typically, the bond covers privacy violations, fraud during the course of an investigation, and any activity that obstructs or conflicts with legal authorities.

It is possible to get a bond as both a private detective agency and as a security guard agency.

The private detective agency license is a 2-year license and the bond is written as a 2-year bond to match. The license and bonds expire two (2) years after its date that the license was issued (set by the Secretary of State Police). Expirations are set for either January or July depending on the date of original application. The license and bond may be renewed thereafter for 2-year terms.
